Refraction
(Stringers + Optical Illusion in Kiln-Formed Glass)
Step into the studio and play with light, line, and illusion. Refraction is a fused glass workshop focused on using thin glass stringers to create the mesmerizing effect of bending Stringer rods, ripples, and shifting movement—even though every line is placed by hand.
You’ll learn how to design and build layered stringer compositions that visually “warp” across the surface, creating that signature refracted look: part pattern, part optical trick, and completely addictive to make. We’ll talk through spacing, direction, rhythm, and how slight changes in placement can transform a piece from calm and linear to dynamic and wavy.
In class you’ll create your own refraction plate This workshop is beginner-friendly, and it’s especially fun for returning students who love design-driven projects and want a fresh way to use clear and color.
You’ll learn:
• How to plan a refraction-style pattern that creates the illusion of bend and motion
• Stringer layout techniques for clean lines, smooth curves, and intentional distortion
• Tips for controlling spacing, symmetry, and visual “flow”
• How layering and transparency affect depth and optical impact
• Best practices full fuse results
Materials:
We’ll be working with Bullseye COE 90 glass. Stringers and base glass are provided unless you specify otherwise.
Classes are on average 2-3 hours depending on the students interaction.
Small Class SIZE is limited to 12 students.
Studio address: 422 West 900 South Unit 107, Salt Lake City UT 84101
Please note IN PERSON WORKSHOPS: Cancelations Requirements: As soon as you know you are not able to make the workshop please let me know. I am not able to honor refunds at this time. However, I am able to transfer the funds to a future class within six months.
Class time is defined as a structured period that begins at a specified start time and concludes at an end time, allowing for a half-hour on completion period. This layaway time offers students a brief interval to complete their projects and prepare for their departure from the studio. However, if projects are not completed within the last half-hour grace of the designated end time, a fee of $35 will be incurred for each additional half-hour required. This policy ensures that students are encouraged to manage their time effectively while also maintaining the integrity of the class schedule.
