Bas-Relief: Meaning and Origins

The easiest way to understand bas-relief is to picture a coin—like a penny or nickel. The raised images on the surface are classic examples of bas-relief. The term itself comes from French, where bas means “low” and relief means “raised work.” English adopted the word in the mid-1600s, around the same time it borrowed the synonymous basso-relievo from Italian. Both languages trace their roots to the same origin, though English took them in separately. Today, bas-relief is the more common term, though the Italian version still occasionally appears.

Workshop Experience

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to score and cut glass into strips, while also exploring the chemistry of glass, kiln-firing temperatures, and how glass transforms under heat. The class is designed for beginners—no prior glass experience is necessary.

Because glass firing takes about 50 hours in the kiln, projects will be picked up at a later date. Each participant will also receive a wooden base with embedded LED lights, designed to illuminate the bas-relief texture of your finished glass piece.

Classes are on average 2-3 hours depending on the students interaction.

Small Class SIZE is limited to 12 students.

Studio address: 422 West 900 South Unit 107, Salt Lake City UT 84101

Please note IN PERSON WORKSHOPS: Cancelations Requirements: As soon as you know you are not able to make the workshop please let me know. I am not able to honor refunds at this time. However, I am able to transfer the funds to a future class within six months.

Class time is defined as a structured period that begins at a specified start time and concludes at an end time, allowing for a half-hour on completion period. This layaway time offers students a brief interval to complete their projects and prepare for their departure from the studio. However, if projects are not completed within the last half-hour grace of the designated end time, a fee of $35 will be incurred for each additional half-hour required. This policy ensures that students are encouraged to manage their time effectively while also maintaining the integrity of the class schedule.
